When you work with spreadsheets, you’ll often find yourself using data from a variety of sources. These may include linked files, websites, and more. One option is to add data from a photo, whether it’s a snapshot of a table or a digital screenshot. Let’s learn how to add data from a picture in Microsoft Excel.

How to Add Data from a Picture in Excel

Excel’s Data from Picture feature is a handy way to quickly import external data. It offers multiple advantages: it allows you to add data from other sources, and it saves you the trouble of manually typing in existing data into your spreadsheet.

To use Data from Picture, you’ll need an image or screenshot of some data. This works best with table-style layouts that appear visually similar to spreadsheets. If you’re taking a photo, be sure it’s aligned well, with the data positioned at a level angle. Screenshots, however, are the most accurate option.

Then, find the Insert tab on Excel’s ribbon and click on it. Here, you have an array of options to choose from. The feature you want is called Data from Picture, and you’ll find it on the left side of the menu. Click on its dropdown, then choose Picture from File.

A Browse window will open. Navigate to the stored image file on your computer, click on it, and click Open. Excel will open the Data from Picture sidebar. This tool analyzes the picture data and previews how it will be placed in your spreadsheet.
